Christiaan Pauw the new MD of Nova CONTINUES

 

Christiaan’s CV reads as follows:

 

Dr C J Pauw holds a BA, BA Honours and a BD degree from the University of Pretoria, all with distinction. He received a DD degree on 4 May 2006 at the same university with academic honours. Since 1998 he is involved in various research and community development projects for the Nova Institute, the Dutch Reformed Church, the Willem Nicol Education Trust and the Christian Social Council in fields as diverse as ABET, urban farming and sustainable household-based agriculture in rural areas and domestic energy efficiency and strategic environmental analysis (SEA) and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

 

He has done qualitative and quantitative research in the field of quality of life, energy efficient housing and household energy consumption patterns in both urban and rural areas. He has also been involved in the design and excecution of numerous environmental health studies. He has extensive experience in the coordination of fieldwork for studies into the environmental health impacts of air pollution as well as on domestic energy use.

 

Dr Pauw has an interest in quality of life studies. He played a key part in the development of the Nova Institute’s QOLA and PIQOLA instruments which are used to analyse quality of life. He is interested in the quantification of quality of life and quality of life impacts.

 

Dr Pauw has experience in the implementation of energy efficiency projects in low-income communities. During 1998 he worked on the eMbalenhle Air Quality Project coordinating research and field activities. He has also been involved in behaviour change research on the same project in 2001 and again in 2004. In 2005 he played a leading role in a study for the DME to evaluate the implementation of the Basa njengo Magogo technique in Tembisa. He was also a core member of the Functional Household Programme Team who won the THRIP Excellence Award for 2005 in the category Social Development. In 2008 he served as the editor of a comprehensive report commissioned for the Royal Danish Embassy and the Departement of Environmental Affiars on air pollution in dense-low income communities.

 

In 2006 and 2007 he was instrumental in the development of a methodology to verify greenhouse gas emission reductions from the implementation of the alternative top-down ignition technique against the WBCSD/WRI GHG Project Protocol. Since 2007 he has been leading Nova's implementation of the implementation of the alternative top-down ignition technique which has taken place in four provinces. In 2010 he played a key role in the development and registration of a Voluntary Gold Standard methodology for the quantification of greenhouse gas emission reductions from the alternative ignition technique.  He has since overseen the registration of 12 projects of Nova’s top-down ignition projects under the Voluntary Gold Standard. He also leads Nova's monitoring team which has undergone validation and verification of its projects by both local auditors and the Gold Standard Foundation.

 

Dr Pauw is furthermore interested in the concept of environmental offsets and has acted as a consultant, researcher and speaker on air quality offsets. He has a particular interested in the quantification of the health benefits of air quality interventions. He is a key member in the Nova team that is developing a methodology for quantifying the water benefits of on-field greenwater management practices.

 

He lives in Hartenbos in the Western Cape with his wife Jeanette and three children. He enjoys playing the guitar, running, open water swimming and sea kayaking.
