The Gold Standard Foundation (www.cdmgoldstandard.org)
has issued the Nova Institute with more than 60 000 Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) to date.
For the year 2009, the projects in the Emfuleni , Mafube and Dipaleseng Municipalities have produced a total of 3286 VERs. In 2010 projects from Sakhile, Seme, Wesselton and a large project in Ekurhuleni and in the Maluti a Phofung Municipality were added to produce 23827 VERS. The yield for 2011 further increased to 33 859 VERs. A small number of 2012 vintage VERs (2785) has already been issued but the bulk is only expected later this year.
Currently Nova operates 16 projects that produce VERs of which 11 have already been issued at least once. This makes Nova a leader in South Africa in the provision of high quality VERs from domestic projects.
Nova is the first organisation in South Africa to be issued with voluntary Gold Standard VERs by the office of the Gold Standard Foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland. These VERs were generated from a top down ignition technique to decrease air pollution and coal use in households that use coal that Nova developed with the community of eMbalenhle in South Africa.
