Nova has over the years developed the skills and systems to be the best one-stop-service-centre in South Africa for the design, implementation and monitoring of large-scale community offset programmes. Nova has extensive expertise in two types of community offset programmes.
Our own offset programme was developed during 2007 to 2015. Under this programme Nova became the first South Africa organisation to register a Gold Standard methodology in the voluntary carbon market, and subsequently successfully registered 16 Nova Gold Standard projects that have been issued with more than 200 000 carbon credits. These credits are the result of interventions implemented in more than 80 000 households. The income raised through the selling of carbon credits is used to further pursue the Nova vision and mission to improve quality of life in low-income communities.
Following our own successful offsets programme, Nova was contracted by five large industries in South Africa to assist with the development of their community air quality offset programmes. Nova has been pivotal in the programme design, baseline measurement and intervention development of these programmes. Nova was the Planning, Development and Monitoring Entity (PDME) for the largest South African industry community offset project completed to date, and is currently providing the same service to two more projects which are entering their implementation phase.
Nova has expertise in the following areas typically important for offset programme design, intervention development, implementation and impact monitoring:
