VERs are Voluntary Emissions Reductions or Verified Emissions Reductions. VERs are instruments to voluntarily offset greenhouse gas emission by enabling energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. One VER represents greenhouse gas emission reductions equivalent to 1 tonne of CO2 emissions. When you buy a VER, you choose to voluntarily compensate for your contribution to climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of an activity, product or service. A greenhouse gas (GHG) is a gas in the atmosphere that can absorb and emit infrared radiation. This process is the cause of the greenhouse effect. Global warming is believed to be the result of intensifying the greenhouse effect mostly through human-produced increases in atmospheric greenhouse gases.
One of the greatest advantages of this mechanism is that you can be assured that you are not investing in a fictional idea or a good intention but in benefits to low income households that have already materialised, making it possible to generate further similar benefits. You buy a VER that has been verified and validated by an independent and trustworthy third party. For each Nova BM VER that you offset you have made it possible for Nova to go and demonstrate a cleaner method of lighting a domestic coal fire to roughly one family in South Africa. Each family sustainably saves between R 300 and R 600 annually on coal, and experience much less hazardous emissions in and around their household.
All Nova VERs are issued according to the Gold Standard. The Gold Standard Foundation is a non-profit organisation under Swiss law that operates a certification scheme for premium quality carbon credits.
